Dr Cheong Wei Yang is Deputy CEO of the National Research Foundation (NRF) of Singapore. The NRF is part of the Prime Minister’s Office, overseeing strategy, policy and governance of all publicly-funded R&D in Science and Technology in Singapore. He also serves as Board Member of Urban Redevelopment Authority of Singapore; Governing Board Member of the Experimental Drug Development Centre, Agency for Science and Technology; Advisory Board Member of Centre for Research and Development in Learning, Nanyang Technological University of Singapore; and Board Member of National Research Foundation Holdings Pte Ltd.
Prior to NRF, Dr Cheong was Divisional Director of the Planning Division in the Ministry of Education, where he led a series of educational reforms and oversaw educational research and international benchmarking. He also served as Deputy Director for Manufacturing and Services, at the Ministry of Trade & Industry, where he oversaw the work of the Economic Development Board of Singapore in attracting foreign direct investments, and was Lead Secretariat for the Economic Strategies Committee (2010) which set out Singapore’s economic strategies for the next decade. As Head of Fiscal Strategy at the Ministry of Finance, he oversaw Singapore’s annual fiscal policy and developed policies to ensure long-term fiscal sustainability for Singapore.
Dr Cheong was awarded the Rhodes Scholarship in 1999 (Singapore, Trinity) to obtain his DPhil and MPhil in Economics (awarded George Webb Medley Prize) from the University of Oxford. He obtained his S.B. in Chemical Engineering, with a minor in Chemistry (awarded Tau Beta Pi and Roger de Friez Hunneman Prize), and his S.B. in Economics (awarded Phi Beta Kappa) from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology on a Public Service Commission Scholarship from Singapore.
